1. The working principle of dried wood pallets biomass pellet processing equipment

The core principle of wood pellet processing equipment, such as wood chip pellet mills, is to convert biomass feedstock into high-density pellet fuel through mechanical compression. The basic process involves three steps: feedstock pretreatment (crushing, pulverizing, and drying), mechanical compression, and finished product processing (cooling and packaging). For example, in a vertical ring die pellet mill, a motor connected to a reducer via a coupling drives the ring die. The feedstock enters the compression zone under gravity, where rollers squeeze the material into the ring die holes. After forming the pellets in the die, a cutter cuts them into pellets of fixed lengths.

How to ensure the stability and sustainability of the raw material supply chain for pallet pellet projects?

Dry pallets are the core raw material, and their supply stability directly determines the life and death of the project. Raw material sustainability must be achieved through "multiple channels + resource expansion + cost lock-in":

1. Establish a diversified recycling network to avoid single dependence

(1) Sign long-term recycling agreements with local and surrounding logistics parks, manufacturing factories, and e-commerce warehousing companies (such as waste wooden pallets in the home appliance, furniture, and machinery industries), clarify the recycling price, frequency, and quality standards (such as no mold, no heavy metal pollution, no chemical coating), and avoid the interruption of raw material supply due to the loss of a single customer.

(2) Expand "supplementary raw material" channels: If the supply of some pallets is insufficient, other agricultural and forestry waste (such as sawdust, straw, and branches) can be used in combination. By optimizing the formula (such as dry pallet fragments accounting for 60%-80%, mixed sawdust improves formability), the dependence on a single raw material can be reduced, while meeting the raw material standards of biomass pellets. 

2. Control raw material costs and transportation radius

(1) Raw material transportation costs usually account for 15%-25% of the total cost. The recycling radius needs to be controlled within 50-100 kilometers (adjusted according to the regional raw material density) to avoid long-distance transportation resulting in excessive costs.

(2) Agree on a "tiered price" with raw material suppliers: when the monthly recycling volume reaches a certain scale, give price discounts; or sign a "long-term fixed price agreement" to avoid the cost risks brought by fluctuations in wood raw material prices (such as the increase in pallet recycling prices during the peak season).

3. Establish a raw material reserve and pretreatment system

(1) Build a standardized raw material warehouse (ventilated, moisture-proof, and fire-proof) to reserve at least 1-2 months of raw material consumption to cope with the surge in demand during the peak season or sudden recycling interruptions (such as factory shutdowns and epidemic control).

(2) Add a "sorting + impurity removal" process in the pretreatment stage: remove impurities in the dry pallet by manual or mechanical means (such as magnetic separators to remove nails, vibrating screens to remove mud and sand) to avoid damage to subsequent pelletizing equipment and improve the purity of pellet fuel (reducing ash content).

As biomass pellet fuel or industrial auxiliary material, wood pallet pellets offer stable physical and chemical properties, and their user experience surpasses traditional loose wood and coal. Specifically, they demonstrate the following:

1. High energy density and excellent combustion efficiency

After compression molding, wood pallet pellets achieve a density of 1.1-1.3g/cm³ (much higher than the 0.4-0.6g/cm³ of loose wood), a volume reduction of 6-8 times, and a calorific value per unit volume of 4200-4800kcal/kg (similar to medium-quality coal). They also resist slagging during combustion (due to the low ash content of 1%-3% found in softwood, wood pallets are primarily made of softwood). Their thermal efficiency is over 30% higher than that of loose wood, making them suitable for use in boilers, fireplaces, hot air furnaces, and other equipment.

2. Convenient Storage and Transportation, Low Cost

The pellets have a regular shape (mostly cylindrical, 6-10mm in diameter and 10-30mm in length) and good fluidity. They can be transported in bags, silos, or conveyor belts, and are resistant to moisture and deformation. They require only one-fifth the storage space of bulk wood of the same thermal mass, and there's no concern for insect infestation or mildew (the high temperatures during the pelletizing process kill insect eggs and mold), reducing labor and space costs during storage and transportation.

Wood pallet pellets can be directly used in automated biomass combustion equipment (such as pellet stoves and biomass boilers). No complex pre-processing (such as chopping or pulverizing) is required; simply feed the pellets at a constant rate through a feeder. Operation is simple, making them suitable for industrial heating, home heating, agricultural greenhouse insulation, and other applications. They can also serve as an auxiliary fuel in biomass power plants.
