How to ensure the stability and sustainability of the raw material supply chain for pallet pellet projects?
Dry pallets are the core raw material, and their supply stability directly determines the life and death of the project. Raw material sustainability must be achieved through "multiple channels + resource expansion + cost lock-in":
1. Establish a diversified recycling network to avoid single dependence
(1) Sign long-term recycling agreements with local and surrounding logistics parks, manufacturing factories, and e-commerce warehousing companies (such as waste wooden pallets in the home appliance, furniture, and machinery industries), clarify the recycling price, frequency, and quality standards (such as no mold, no heavy metal pollution, no chemical coating), and avoid the interruption of raw material supply due to the loss of a single customer.
(2) Expand "supplementary raw material" channels: If the supply of some pallets is insufficient, other agricultural and forestry waste (such as sawdust, straw, and branches) can be used in combination. By optimizing the formula (such as dry pallet fragments accounting for 60%-80%, mixed sawdust improves formability), the dependence on a single raw material can be reduced, while meeting the raw material standards of biomass pellets.
2. Control raw material costs and transportation radius
(1) Raw material transportation costs usually account for 15%-25% of the total cost. The recycling radius needs to be controlled within 50-100 kilometers (adjusted according to the regional raw material density) to avoid long-distance transportation resulting in excessive costs.
(2) Agree on a "tiered price" with raw material suppliers: when the monthly recycling volume reaches a certain scale, give price discounts; or sign a "long-term fixed price agreement" to avoid the cost risks brought by fluctuations in wood raw material prices (such as the increase in pallet recycling prices during the peak season).
3. Establish a raw material reserve and pretreatment system
(1) Build a standardized raw material warehouse (ventilated, moisture-proof, and fire-proof) to reserve at least 1-2 months of raw material consumption to cope with the surge in demand during the peak season or sudden recycling interruptions (such as factory shutdowns and epidemic control).
(2) Add a "sorting + impurity removal" process in the pretreatment stage: remove impurities in the dry pallet by manual or mechanical means (such as magnetic separators to remove nails, vibrating screens to remove mud and sand) to avoid damage to subsequent pelletizing equipment and improve the purity of pellet fuel (reducing ash content).


Core evaluation indicators of wood pallet pellet fuel quality:
1.Calorific value: determines the heat release capacity of combustion.
16-19 MJ/kg (about 4000-4600 kcal/kg) Close to medium-quality coal, far exceeding straw pellets (13-15 MJ/kg), meeting industrial/civilian heating needs.
2.Density and hardness: Anti-crushing, easy to store and transport.
Density 1.1-1.3 g/cm³, hardness ≥60.
High density means it is not easy to crush (transportation loss ≤3%), not easy to collapse during combustion, and stable thermal efficiency.
3. Moisture content: affects combustion efficiency and coking risk.
8%-12%. Too low moisture content will easily crack, too high will cause black smoke and reduce thermal efficiency (for every 1% moisture content, thermal efficiency will drop by 0.5%-1%).
4.Ash content: determines the amount of residue after combustion.
0.3%-1.5% (much lower than coal). 10%-20%) Low ash content means low frequency of slag cleaning, which reduces equipment wear, and the residue can be used as raw material for organic fertilizer.
5. Forming rate and appearance: reflects production stability and practicality.
Forming rate ≥95%, smooth surface, no obvious cracks. High forming rate means high raw material utilization rate, and regular appearance facilitates automated feeding (such as boiler and fireplace feeding systems).
