1. The working principle of wet hay/grass/alfalfa biomass pellet processing equipment

Wet hay/grass/alfalfa (with a moisture content typically above 30%) cannot be directly pelletized. It must first undergo pretreatment to adjust its moisture content and physical properties, which is a prerequisite for ensuring pellet quality. The pretreated hay/grass/alfalfa fragments are then mechanically extruded through pelletizing equipment to transform them from "powder" to "pellets," which is the core of the entire process.

2. Characteristics of wet hay/grass/alfalfa biomass pellet processing equipment

The core characteristics of wet hay/grass/alfalfa pelleting are: "using drying equipment as the core pretreatment unit, strengthening anti-sticking and wear resistance in the pelleting process, and taking into account both continuous operation and environmental protection."

(1) Application scenario: A processing workshop is built in or around the wet hay/grass/alfalfa base. The harvested wet hay/grass/alfalfa is directly fed into the equipment, and after drying and pelleting, it is converted into stable pellets (feed or fuel). This avoids waste of raw materials and reduces subsequent transportation costs. 

(2) Reasons for suitability: The wet hay/grass/alfalfa harvested from large-scale planting bases usually has a high moisture content when fresh. If not processed in time, it may become moldy and heat up within 2-3 days. Moreover, the weight loss will occur during transportation due to moisture evaporation.

1.Grinding Process:

A.The process is mainly used to grind wet hay/grass/alfalfa within 1.8m in diameter into wet hay/grass/alfalfa pieces. The rotary cutting mode of the outer chain of the gear, the rotary cutting rotor blade is sharp, and the blade types are various, which can be rotated to cut various bales of grass with different diameters, different thicknesses, different lengths and different water contents

3.Drying Process: 

A.This process is mainly used to dry the hay/grass/alfalfa dust from 30-35% to 10-15%.  

B.Capacity: 6 tons/hour.

C.TONY use 1set of 2*24m rotary drum dryer for this process,TONY hot stove is made of firebrick pan, shell with H steel plate as the frame.   There are 3 layers of fire blocking device inside, which can effectively prevent the fire from entering the tumble dryer.Customers can choose to use waste wood, biomass pellets, natural gas, etc. as fuel for the hot air furnace

Processing Flow for Biomass Pellets Using Wet Hay/Alfalfa/Grass

1. Raw Material Pretreatment:

Wet alfalfa requires drying, either by natural air drying or mechanical drying, to reduce the moisture content to a suitable pelletizing range. The hay or dried alfalfa is then pulverized to a particle size suitable for pelleting, typically around 2-5 mm.

2. Pelleting:

The pulverized grass powder is fed into a pelletizer, where it is extruded into pellets. During the pelletizing process, a binder may be added as needed to enhance pellet formation and strength.

3. Cooling and Screening:

The pellets are cooled in a cooler to reduce their temperature and moisture content, achieving a stable state. They are then screened through a grading screen to remove unqualified pellets and fines, which are then returned to the pelletizer for reprocessing.

4. Packaging and Warehousing:

Qualified pellets are packaged and ready for storage or sale.

Physical and Combustion Properties - Suitable for Various Use Cases:

1. Stable and Controllable Calorific Value:

Alfalfa pellets typically have a calorific value of 14-17 MJ/kg, which is lower than wood pellets but higher than common straw pellets like corn straw. The calorific value can be fine-tuned by mixing different grass ingredients (such as dry wheat straw or oat straw), making them suitable for applications such as home heating and small industrial boilers.

2. Uniform Form and Easy Storage:

Pellets typically have a diameter of 6-8 mm, a length of 10-30 mm, and a density of 1.1-1.3 g/cm³. Compared to loose hay, these pellets are 5-8 times smaller in volume, require less storage space, and are resistant to moisture absorption and mold, making them suitable for long-term storage and long-distance transportation.

3. Excellent Combustion Characteristics:

The compact pellet structure prevents charring during combustion, resulting in a stable flame and strong afterburning properties. Frequent refueling is unnecessary, making them suitable for both manual-refueling home stoves and automatic-feed industrial equipment.
